Jake is an easygoing, laid back guy. It takes a lot to ruffle his feathers, and he tends to smirk things off. He is talkative without really saying anything; he can get people talking about themselves and participate in very long conversations, but he never really reveals much about himself. Jake is charming and flirty, but he is a believer in monogamy and is a bit old fashioned when it comes to women and dating.
Very athletic, Jake loves being outside. He loves surfing and playing beach volleyball, football, and baseball, though soccer will always be his favorite sport. He enjoys watching pretty much any sport save for NASCAR. He can often be found hanging out on the beach or hiking around the island. He owns a jet ski and hopes to one day have a boat as well.
Jake is a very hard worker and always puts his job first. He does not tolerate drug use of any kind, and drinks very rarely. When it comes to the people he arrests, Jake tends to push for rehab before incarceration. He does not harbor any sort of sympathy for repeat offenders, however. His experience with his brother’s drug habit has enabled him to be excellent at finding and coaxing sources to share their information, and has a great rapport with the sources that help him out. He has had the opportunity for promotions, but has turned them down. If he can help it, he will never leave the vice squad. His brother is the reason that Jake became a cop in the first place, and Sam is always in the back of his mind. He gets teased every now and then about being a goody-goody, and he just laughs along with it. The teasing never really goes too far, though; most people know that when provoked, Jake can be pretty lethal thanks to his martial arts.
Being evasive is Jake’s best defense mechanism. He is very good at making people feel like they know him while holding on to the mystery and secrets of his life. He rarely takes dates or friends back to his apartment, and if you were to ask them they probably wouldn’t be able to tell you right off the bat where he lives. Jake is friendly with his parents, but he has become more distant with them since he found out about the extent of their lies to him regarding Sam.
Where Sam is concerned, Jake is a closed book. He tries not to think about Sam too often, because it puts him in a terribly angry and negative mood. Jake still harbors unresolved feelings towards his brother, and is secretly in therapy to deal with it. He will rarely mention his brother at all, and never brings him up or openly talks about him. Along the same lines, Jake typically won’t give the exact reason why he became a cop and is pretty bemused that people always want to know. He has a pretty good-sized group of friends both on and off the force, and rarely meets someone he openly dislikes. Jake is a great believer in respect and will always give it when he receives it. He treats those he arrests with respect, even if he personally does not believe they deserve it. In his mind, as cliché as it seems, any problem can be solved without violence. He takes this belief from his martial arts teachings, and therefore will only fight if it is absolutely necessary. The only thing that could provoke him into an immediate rage is anything said about his older brother. Thankfully, due to his silence about Sam, this rarely ever happens.
Talents & Skills: Earning trust, self-control, keeping secrets, patience, martial arts, “people skills”
Weaknesses: Denial, mistrust, forgiveness, talking about himself
Likes: War movies, rain, running, playing sports, watching sports, ESPN, work, the beach, Florida, green, dogs, working out, being around people
Dislikes: Cats, horror movies, snow, alcohol, drugs, nosy people, repeat offenders, disrespect, days off, therapy, talking about himself, being inside, sitting around, sleeping, visiting Washington

Dave and Karen’s life together didn’t begin “magically”. They weren’t high school or even college sweethearts. They weren’t out saving the world together. He didn’t save her life, and she didn’t fall into his lap. Much like their lives in general, Dave and Karen met in a completely ordinary way: their married friends set them up on a blind date.
Dave, a computer engineer, and Karen, a headhunter, were both successful on their own. Both of them had very well paying jobs that they enjoyed and were good at. They were both college educated, stable, and happy with their lives. When they were set up on their date, neither was expecting to fall in love at first sight.
Which they didn’t do. Karen thought Dave was nerdy and boring; Dave got the impression that Karen was extremely stuck up. Both reported to the friends that the date did not work out and went on their separate ways. The friends, however, were not dissuaded as easily and continued to invite Karen and Dave to the same functions, practically forcing the two to be together.
It took four months before Dave asked Karen out on another date, and this time they got along much better. After another year and a half, the two got engaged and were soon married. They settled down in Tacoma, Washington, and carried on with their lives.
Dave and Karen welcomed two boys, Samuel and Jacob. Five years younger than his brother, little Jake idolized Sam. He followed the elder boy everywhere, determined to do everything he had done. When Sam decided to go out for soccer, Jake begged to be signed up for the YMCA leagues. Sam chose to study tae kwon do, and Jake signed up two months later. When teachers and administrators compared Jake to his older brother, he didn’t roll his eyes with frustration and boredom. He beamed with pride.
Once Sam entered college in the Midwest, Jake was forced to find his own way around life. He managed, thankfully, to create his own identity separate from his brother and developed a large group of friends, becoming the captain of his soccer team, getting As and Bs, and just being a typical, good suburban boy.
Sam, on the other hand, did not adjust to life so well. He began experimenting with drugs and, unbeknownst to his family, began spending his tuition money and other funds on heroin. Being arrested for the third time forced Sam to return home to Washington, where he lied to his parents and brother about why he dropped out and continued to frequent drug houses and unsavory corners. Once his parents realized what was going on, they forced him into rehab and kept Jake in the dark for as long as possible. Sam relapsed three times, and his parents eventually kicked him out when Jake was a sophomore in college.
Jake still idolized his brother and was in complete denial about what was going on. He began taking care of his brother, trying to keep him away from tempting situations and making sure Sam didn’t go hungry or homeless. Jake would pick up his elder brother when he was too high to drive, would bail him out of jail, and would generally do anything he could to make sure that Sam was “okay”. Though Karen and Dave understood that Sam was an addict and would not sober up until he wanted to, Jake continued to insist that it was because no one believed in him or gave him a chance.
Jake’s attitude changed one November night. He had not heard from his brother in a few days and was out searching for him, driving past his usual haunts. When he finally did track down Sam, he couldn’t believe his eyes: there stood his brother in a dark alley, holding a knife to a woman’s throat while a man (who Jake assumed was the woman’s husband) dug through his wallet, throwing bills at Sam’s feet. Shocked and enraged, Jake backed Sam against a corner once the hostages left and demanded to know what he had gotten his hands on and where he had hidden his drugs. Sam just grinned at his brother, insulted him, and spit in his face. Jake left Sam there and went home disgusted. His parents sat down with him, and Jake finally asked for the truth about Sam. What he heard wasn’t pretty: Sam had been in and out of jail for three years, in and out of rehab for two and a half, and had even stolen from his parents—and Jake.
His illusion of his heroic older brother shattered, Jake changed his major to criminal justice and cut off all communication with Sam, though it absolutely killed him. He made it his goal to graduate at the top of his class, and did so with honors an entire semester early before moving as far as he could from his brother—all the way to Orange Island, Florida. Shortly after his graduation, Jake found out his brother had finally died of an overdose. Jake keeps Sam in the back of his mind, fighting drugs as a member of the Orange Island Police Department.| E X T R A S |
