Alistar is pretty normal, aside from the fact that he is kind of a superhero. He lives in a small apartment, works a dead-end job, and has little destiny. As people go, he’s amazingly level headed, pretty determined, and never does things in halves. In his relationships, he’s almost always the voice of reason, the solid rock, the ever-flowing spring that his friends look to for wisdom and sound judgement. He is not afraid to give himself until there is nothing left to give, but he is also more willing to say what needs to be said, whether or not those involved want to hear it. Although, he has never been a strong believer in fate, he does feel that karma has been particularly rough on him as opposed to other people. He’s terribly cynical and often spends a lot of his day trying to figure out what he could have possibly done wrong to make karma hate him so much. He religiously follows his horoscope, which is about as close to a religion as he has ever come, and will sometimes put two nickles in his right pocket to "even out his atmosphere." Even though he feels there are mysterious forces constantly aligning against him, he takes life events in stride and always seems to have a pun for every need. His sense of humour is both quirky and off-beat, to the extreme that many people don’t understand it, but those who do can find he is quite the comedian and frequently cracks jokes at others’ expenses (although he never means it seriously).
He loves easily, but not recklessly, and Ernest Hemmingway is the love of his life. So much so in fact that he has a small Ernest Hemmingway collection in his home ranging from his autograph to very expensive first edition copies of the man’s books to a new puppy named Ernest. Some have said that the Ernest obsession has gotten a little bit out of control, but for Alistar, it’s exactly what he needs after a long days work: a good book and a cup of coffee. He’s always really in to his origami and has gotten quite good at it over the years, much to the dismay of his coworkers as he fanatically decorates the office in little paper cats and cranes. His weird life behaviours have made many people leary of him as he speaks of great lengths for his love of: taking baths, carving pumpkins, playing badminton, and eating cashews. As a little social butterfly, Alistar likes to speak frequently and quickly, often mumbled, so that no one really understands him. He is ancy and fidgety and never sits down on chairs. To him, chairs are boring. Radiators, tables, and piles of books aren’t. It's no wonder his apartment is so cluttered with "things"-- if it wasn't cluttered with piles of things, he'd never have a place to sit down!
Alistar is a strange man. When he isn’t at work, he’s a writer. A novelist, a poet, a sketch artist, a storyteller, and, when the mood takes him, a minstrel and player of some passing skill. He runs a very popular art site called Oliland under the very secretive alias “Oli” and he runs the site in complete secrecy, late at night, as if it was some kind of evil overthrowing plot. As such, he doesn’t tell anyone he knows about it. In fact, he doesn’t talk about any of his artistic abilities, and pretends, in real life, that he isn’t artistic at all. He hoards mass amounts of paintings and sketches throughout his apartment: mostly of abstract, dream-like creatures that are both exciting and intrinsically strange. There isn’t a real reason that Alistar doesn’t like to share his art aside from the fact that it makes him feel like he’s leading a double-life, an undercover superhero sort of existence. Where he is just a small-time, unimportant beat cop by day, he is a renowned internet artist by night. For him, it’s quite a romantic ideal.
Alistar is very much a creature of habit. He gets up every morning and eats his small bowl of Trix cereal, goes to work and folds origami for his coworkers, goes home, makes a bowl of popcorn, works on Oliland, and watches movies until the wee hours of the morning until he falls asleep on the couch. He is so conditioned in to his rituals that if they are broken, he is often confused and disoriented. For this reason alone, he doesn’t like most holidays as they disrupt his daily routine. Although he doesn't like most, Christmas is a time of year that he eagerly looks forward to every year because that means he gets to take time off of work and take the short drive to his family home and spend the week with his quite large family.

Alistar has always had a good memory for things that happened in the past, especially those memories tied with strong emotions like the time his brother fell off of his bike and hurt his chin. His brother, after returning from the hospital with stitches, had to explain to seven-year-old Alistar that his brain had fallen out and they had to put it in the wrong way and now his brain was in his neck. It took three years until Alistar figured out that his older brother’s brain wasn’t actually in her neck, but that’s the type of relationship the family had and he remembered it vividly. He had an absolutely fairytale childhood that involved lots of family members and silly, fun memories.
Growing up in the southern fringe of Orange Island, where the homes are charming, but modest, Alistar couldn’t have asked for a better youth. The Barnes family was composed of funny sort of people: the entire family lived within a half mile of each other as to expose the next generation of Barnes to the value of being close to a large family. Aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and grandparents all lived close and the family would frequently host large get-togethers and feasts. The youngest couple of the family, Annie and Joshua, were blessed in the month of January with their first baby, a bouncy, blue-eyed boy named Roland. Two years later came along Alistar, their second and final child. Alistar and Roland were quick friends and even quicker enemies. When Alistar wasn’t being toted around by his older brother like a Barbie doll, they were usually to be found bickering and fighting over toys; a tradition that lives true to the boys today. If Alistar wasn’t in school or fighting with his brother, he could usually be found fishing with his grandpa, wrestling with his older cousins, being given a makeover by his older nieces, or knitting with his aunt. Even from a young age, he could remember all the skills he had gained from his various family members (afterall, every bachelor should know how to do a good cross-stitch).
Little happened for a few years spanning Alistar being seven and twelve years old besides his Aunt Madia having a litter of kittens, Nephew Roy buying a fishing boat, Alistar’s brother falling off of a bike, and Alistar thinking his brother’s brain was in the wrong way. He was raised a proper, family man with all the manners, courtesies, and etiquette as a gentleman. When his mother and father would host dinner parties at their house, it was always little Alistar who would run around and collect all the girls’ coats, pull out their chairs, and open the doors for them, even if it was the bathroom door. Still, of all of his good memories, his favourite was always the time he spent with his grandfather out in a nearby lake fishing. Even as an adult, he takes his now much feebler grandfather out of the house and to the lake every Sunday so they can fish. It’s a tradition that only severe weather can cancel.
Somewhere between catching his first fish and his brother falling off of his bike, Alistar met the love of his life. And by love of his life, he was thirteen and had his first girlfriend, a lovely, shy girl named Sarah. Sarah and Alistar were fast friends and started doing everything together. Alistar would invited Sarah on his fishing trips with his grandpa, and Sarah would have Alistar over for dinner and movies at her parents’ house. Although the “dating” between them faded out, they remained inseparably close and the three of them, Alistar, Roland, and Sarah were the tres amigos. They grew up together, they got their driver’s licenses together, they passed tests together, and they failed tests together. Nothing changed until Alistar and Sarah were both eighteen and Roland was twenty. They were having a good night, a summer night after Alistar and Sarah just graduated high school together at the top of their class and they were all at Alistar and Roland’s house in celebration. Around midnight, Alistar began to feel ill and Roland offered to drive Sarah home.
It would be the last time that Alistar would see either his brother or his best friend alive. After being hit by a drunk driver, which killed Roland instantly, and left Sarah in a coma for seven days before she finally passed, was the pinnacle moment of young Alistar’s life. After feeling so alone and angry, he decided that he didn’t want to let this happen to anyone else, so, he applied to the local university and got accepted in to criminal justice degree program. After graduation, he was employed as a beat cop for the force. It’s a job that he doesn’t particularly enjoy, especially now that the hurt is still there, but he continues with it instead of pursuing his true passion, art and website design, out of memory for his lost brother and friend.| E X T R A S |
. Sometimes, he carries two nickles in his left pocket because his dominant side is his right. It keeps him balanced, you know?
. He has a bright orange cat that he adopted from the pound named Cheese.
