Nate comes off as a gloomy, broody guy upon first encounter. He takes a book nearly everywhere with him to avoid talking to people, and would rather watch them than speak to them. He does not crave social attention like most people do. Nate has never had anyone he could consider a close friend, and even now he does not try to form those relationships. He rarely ever speaks of his childhood. When asked about it, he just says he grew up in New York City and change the subject. Nate does not trust easily at all.
Nate has one or two “friends”, but he is not that close to them. He can turn on the charm for his job at the bar, but when his shift is over he is back to his old self and he avoids people whenever possible. He rarely tells anyone more than his name, his job, his major, and where he is from, even girls. Nate has never really had a serious girlfriend because the moment they start to ask questions, he bolts. He does not want to talk about himself, and so far no one has been able to break the barrier he has spent years building.
Often coming across as blunt and arrogant, Nate actually has mild Asperger’s syndrome, which is a form of autism. He has a very hard time interacting with others and cannot read facial expressions. Nate also has a hard time understanding difference in vocal pitch and cannot tell when someone is joking versus when they are being serious. He takes everything at face value and is always serious. He firmly believes in fairness and honesty and will not keep a secret, ever. He tells people exactly what he’s thinking and has no filter between his mind and his mouth. He never tries to be mean or spiteful, but sometimes his words are less than kind and feelings get hurt.
Nate has a fascination with history, specifically European history. He will spend hours checking out and then reading books from the library about every historical subject and event he can get his hands on. He would much rather read about people than interact with them and will compare current social situations to historical ones from the past as a way of explaining why people do the things they do. That being said, he still does not have a very strong understanding of relationships and socializing.
Strengths: Level-headedness. Nate definitely knows how to keep his cool. He is the guy to go to whenever you need an unemotional, logical opinion.
Observance. While he dislikes interacting with people, Nate is incredibly observant. He spends so much time watching people that he has no problems picking up on routines.
Independence. Nate does not need other people to make him happy. He is perfectly content all by himself and does not pay too much attention to the status of the people he surrounds himself with.
Weaknesses: Distant. Nate believes he needs absolutely no one to survive, and therefore never tries to really connect with people. He has people he refers to as “friends”, but none of them are ever someone whom he confides in.
Pessimism. Often seen as Mr. Downer, Nate often fails to see the positive in situations. He firmly believes that the worst can and always will happen.
Stubbornness. Nate does not change his mind often. When he makes a decision, he will stick to it. Period.
Likes: Books, history, silence, being alone, war movies, dogs
Dislikes: Parties, cats, roommates, reality television, fiction books, the beach

Destiny Beaufort was seventeen when she began an intimate relationship with Maddox Holmes, a wealthy businessman. Destiny’s parents obviously did not approve of their daughter being romantically involved with the married 45-year-old, and when she came home pregnant they immediately kicked her out. When she went to Maddox for help, he said he could not jeopardize his relationship with his wife, now that they were “working things out”. Angry and alone, Destiny hitchhiked to New York City from her hometown of Cicero, New York.
Destiny managed to find work as a waitress, but she never quite let go of her partying ways, despite the fact that she had to stop drinking until the baby was born. While she never regretted her relationship with Maddox, she did regret her decision not to get an abortion. The day after her son was born, Destiny decided she was not cut out for motherhood. She wrapped the boy in a towel and dropped him off at a fire station in Long Island, disappearing into the city. She figured by leaving her son in Long Island instead of the heart of the city, she would never run the risk of seeing him again. She was right.
The firefighters who found the child tried to track down his mother, but were not successful. They decided to at least christen him with a name, and after a long argument decided on Nathaniel, after their late Captain; Arthur, because their station was nicknamed “Camelot”; and Smith, because it was the most common last name they could think of. They took him to a local hospital, and after being given a clear bill of health he was placed into the foster care system.
Nate entered the Beres home at age three, and did not leave until age fourteen. He was physically and verbally abused, but learned quickly to keep quiet; he had a roof over his head and food, and he knew he was very lucky to have what he did. He did marginally well in school, but made very few friends and was described by his teachers as being “hard and independent”. While Nate never really applied himself to his schoolwork, history became an escape for him and he had an almost obsessive passion. He attended as many seminars and special talks he could at local universities before he even finished middle school. Once he entered high school at age fourteen, Nate was placed in honors history and developed a close relationship with his teacher, Ms. Williams. She encouraged him to read and delve deeply into the past, and piqued his interest in various other aspects of history.
One morning after a particularly violent fight with his foster father, Nate came into his history class with his arm in a sling. Ms. Williams was immediately suspicious because she had seen the various cuts and bruises that would randomly appear on Nate’s arms. After pulling him aside and getting a transparent explanation, Ms. Williams took her concerns to the principal. The principal, in turn, was legally obligated to contact social services, and by the next afternoon Nate had been pulled from his foster home and his foster father was under arrest for child abuse.
After spending a couple of nights in a group home, Nate was placed with Jim and Martha MacRae. The MacRaes took to Nate immediately, and he slowly began to trust them and grow comfortable. The MacRaes decided to go ahead and attempt to adopt Nate right after he turned sixteen. Although he played off the announcement as no big deal, Nate was thrilled that he would finally have a permanent home. His attitude in school began to change, and his grades began to steadily improve.
At the end of Nate’s junior year, he received news that devastated him: for a reason not disclosed to him, the MacRaes had terminated their adoption process. Nate was hurt and infuriated, and promptly ran away. He made his way to Long Island and got a job as a busboy in a cheap diner. He managed to get his GED, and decided to give it a shot and apply for the highly respected university Ms. Williams had told him about so long ago—Orange Island University. Nate had never even given a second thought to how he would pay for the school, primarily because he never thought he would be accepted. Needless to say, he was incredibly shocked when he was granted not only admission, but also scholarship money. Nate got a job the instant he set foot on campus and works every night to earn extra money, which he saves for life after graduation.| A P P E A R A N C E |
Standing at 5’10’, Nate is nearly always in jeans with a dark gray or dark blue hoodie, all well-worn. The hoodies are missing their drawstrings and their pockets are frayed. His “body type” could be described as average, and he does not work out on a regular basis to maintain any sort of physique.
His short brown hair is usually just slightly mussed with no gel or anything in it. His brown eyes are often narrowed in concentration, and he has mastered the skill of raising one eyebrow whenever he feels the situation demands it. Nate has a scar in the shape of an “L” by his right eye, and a faint scar on the edge of his chin. He has no tattoos or piercings and never wears jewelry. He keeps his keys and his wallet in his pockets, and otherwise carries nothing.
