Cassidy is as fiery as her red hair. She makes her presence known and always has a smile on her face. She is a very open and outgoing person and she loves talking to and meeting new people. She loves talking about her home and her swimming, and gets very excited when people want to know about her life.
Cassidy is very comfortable talking about her deafness and sign language. She has to be asked before she’ll volunteer information, but she gets a kick out of teaching people signs and showing them just how adapted she has become. She speaks very quickly both with her mouth and with her hands, and she often bounces from one topic to another.
A very perky girl, Cassidy very rarely gets angry. She has learned to let most things slide right off of her, but she does have some sensitive topics that will send her into a rage if discussed or insulted. She is very close to her family and talks to them at least once a week. She is proud of her heritage and loves sharing her culture with other people.
Cassidy sees the best in people and has very few individuals she dislikes. She believes in second chances and will usually give people a second chance to get into her good graces. One of the only things she will not forgive, however, is someone discriminating against her. She detests it when people make her seem like less of a person because of her deafness, and she will go out of her way to prove them wrong.
Cassidy trusts very easily. She likes having as many friends as possible and treats every one of them as if she has been best friends with them for years. She loves a challenge and will never back down from a dare. Cassidy is virtually fearless and enjoys hanging around people who are the same way. She has a hard time relating to timid people at times and always makes it her mission to make them more daring. Cassidy is rarely deterred by someone who ignores her or tries to anger her.
A tomboy by nature, Cassidy struggles with being feminine. She really dislikes makeup and fancy clothes, and would much rather wear jeans and hang with the boys. She often has problems moving from friends to romantic interests and this sometimes eats at her confidence. She is too proud to ask for help becoming more “girly” and just stews about it, trying to get there her own way.
Strengths: Optimistic. Cassidy always looks on the bright side of things. She rarely has a frown on her face and strives to spread her positive outlook to others.
Adventurous. Always up for something new, Cassidy loves doing things that push her boundaries. She rarely shies away from anything.
Persistence. It takes a lot to convince Cassidy that she cannot do something. She acknowledges her failures and then just tries again, and again, and again.
Weaknesses: Pride. Cassidy has a very hard time accepting help. She will often make excuses for why she does not need it, and she gets angry with people who try to help her or pity her.
Anger. Cassidy has a temper. Not just a yell-at-you temper, but a scream-at-you, ignore-you-for-days, hold-a-grudge temper. It takes a lot to make her angry, but when she is angry it’s best to run in the opposite direction.
Competitive. Cassidy hates losing. She will begrudgingly admit she is wrong or has lost, but will nearly always insist on a rematch and will immediately try to pretend her loss never occurred.
Likes: Swimming, being outside, talking, traveling, rain, laughing
Dislikes: Judgmental people, dresses, being alone, being quiet, pink, snow

Shay Hawkins, a police officer, and Erin O’Day, a teacher, met in Lisburn Ireland as teenagers. They fell in love immediately, and much to their parents’ delight married right after school and settled down in Lisburn to have a family. Unfortunately, nature disagreed and they had an incredibly difficult time starting their family. They tried for nine long years until a miracle happened—Erin was pregnant with their first child. She would also be their last, despite efforts on their part to the contrary.
Cassidy was born in November with her father’s fiery red hair and her mother’s deep brown eyes. She was a perfectly happy, healthy child until shortly after her first birthday. She contracted meningitis, and despite her parents’ best efforts, the virus irreparably damaged Cassidy’s hearing and speaking. Devastated, Erin and Shay put their daughter into speech therapy as soon as she was old enough, and made sure to teach her sign language. She became fluent in sign language and turned into an excellent lip reader. They debated about sending her to a special school, but agreed that she would do best to learn how to adapt right off the bat.
And adapt Cassidy did. She became a talkative, bright, adventurous, outgoing girl with an inability to keep quiet and an intense interest in people. She thrived in school, becoming a straight-A, popular, athletic student. She fell in love with several sports including volleyball and soccer, but her passion was in swimming. She began competitively swimming in Ireland at age seven, and quickly became one of the top swimmers in the country. When she was thirteen, she came to compete in Florida, and begged her parents to let her look around at schools. They wholeheartedly agreed, and Cassidy visited several universities before stopping by Orange Island. She fell in love with the entire campus and environment, and knew she had found her new home. Erin was concerned that her only daughter wanted to move across the ocean for school, and Shay was too. However, upon inspecting the local police department, his fears were settled and he eventually convinced Erin that their daughter would be just fine in the States alone.
Once she returned to Ireland, Cassidy threw herself relentlessly into preparing for Orange Island. Her parents saved as much as they could for her education, and she continued to achieve high grades and move further in her swimming. To make a little extra money, Cassidy also tutored students in sign language at school. She managed to receive scholarships for both her grades and her athletics, and that paired with the money her parents had saved was enough to send Cassidy to the Florida university for all four years. She made the school’s swim team and settled on majoring in psychology. Being in larger classes, however, have forced her to accept the help of a sign language interpreter. She strives to do most of, if not all, of her own communicating when possible. Cass dreams of becoming a social worker and helping disabled foster children. She still loves visiting Ireland every summer to see her parents and is unsure about returning there after school.
Shay and Erin made sure that Cassidy never saw herself as disabled, and instilled a sort of indifference in her about her deafness. While she does not completely ignore it, she certainly refuses to let it define her and often makes sure that people cannot tell she is deaf until they speak to her. Cassidy is not shy about her deafness once asked and is always more than willing to share sign language with others.
