Sophia laid a blanket down on the grass under a large tree. It was a lovely day out and Sophia was sick of being alone in the dorm. Her room mate was always out doing something and even though she wasn't good with people Sophia knew that she needed to be around them. She could already see quite a few people out on the green and just hearing people again was nice.
She was missing her family and all the noise they generated. She missed the barking of the dogs and laughing of Tara and the twins as they ran around the house, trailing chaos in their wake. She even missed the loud fighting and music that thrummed through the house when Jessica was feeling particularly moody.
Sophia pulled her book out of her bag and laid down on her blanket. She started to read her book, listening to the white noise around her.

Juliette was running to the library. There wasn't really much of a need for her to run, but the urge to hurry was strong and Juliette felt that she should be rushing. There was a book she wanted and it had probably never actually been checked out due to it being horribly boring, but Juliette was determined that she needed to have it right that second.
She was wearing jeans for the occasion, since she was running, and so at least, when she tripped over the girl, nothing was exposed. She shrieked and flailed forward, just barely catching herself before she toppled over. When she had steadied herself, she shook her hair away from her face and looked down at the girl reading underneath her.
"I am so sorr--oh!" She looked at the book and her face lit up. "I used to love that book! Have you read it before?" Realizing that she had yet to apologize, she shook her hair out again. "Oh, sorry, I meant to apologize--sorry for tripping over you."

Sophia almost had a heart attack when someone almost literally fell into her lap. There was a shriek, Sophia wasn't sure which person exactly that came from but she thought it hadn't been herself, and some flailing but finally the strange girl seemed to right herself.
Sophia blinked as the redhead started to apologize only to get sidetracked by the book in her hands. She checked the title. Yup it was Wild Magic by Tamora Pierce.
“Um… Yes… I have read almost all of the Tortal books.” Sophia even owned all of the books that were in the original cover art. They were kind of her favorite books, even if they were for a slightly younger audience.
“I um… Forgive you. Of course I do. Um... I can see it was an accident.”

Juliette smiled. She felt odd having a conversation while standing over the person she'd just tripped over, but now that she had started, she also felt odd just ending the conversation and running off.
"I think I read them all in middle school," she said, laughing and running a hand through her hair. She hadn't read a fantasy book like that in years--just the silly teen ones she picked up if they caught her eye at the library. "Are you a freshman?"

"No, I'm not a freshman. I'm a Junior. I just transferred into the school though so I still have no clue where everything is."
Sophia smiled back at the girl. Sophia then realized that neither of them had introduced themselves. She almost felt bad about it but then she remembered that this girl had fallen into her lap only moments ago. This thought, however, had her deciding that it was time to exchange names.
"My name is Sophia, by the way. What's yours?"

"Oh, I see," she said, nodding with her eyebrows drawn together. She hadn't really thought the girl looked like a freshman, but it was worth an ask, at least. She made a mental note not to ask her about Greek life--apparently, it offended some people.
"I'm Juliette! Where were you before here?" she asked. She still felt awkward just standing there so, looking around to find the patch of grass that she deemed least likely to stain her clothes, she selected a seat and plopped herself into it.

"Um... Are you a freshman?" Sophie felt it was only polite to ask the question back. Plus it would allow her to know if she would be running into her in the halls in her dorm while giving a guess as to what her age was.
Watching as the girl sat down in the grass she replied to her question. "I was at a local college. It used to be a community college but it.. Ah... recently became a state college so Im not sure exactly what to call it."
Sophia noticed that Juliette didn't really look like she was enjoying the grass. "You are welcome to join me on my blanket if you want." She scooted over to emphasize her point.

"Mmhmm!" She beamed. Most people could tell that Juliette was a freshman, being that she dressed like a schoolgirl and often talked like one. "Just got here at the beginning of the semester."
At her response, she nodded along. "Oh, that makes sense. Where are you from? I'm from Connecticut." She scooted onto the blanket at the girl's offer, smoothing her skirt out so that it wouldn't wrinkle while she was sitting. "Thank you!"

Sophia smiled in response to the girls enthusiasm. It was refreshing to see someone with such a refreshing attitude towards school. Most people who were freshman, from her experience, were sullen and broody things and if they weren't sullen or broody they were bratty and high-pitched in the most grating way possible.
"I'm actually from Orange Park. It's a town a few hours north of here. It backs up to Jacksonville." She thought for a moment for a question to ask. "So why did you choose a place so far from home?"

"Oh, I guess there are a lot of places with orange names here," Juliette said, chuckling. She was not used to fruit-themed states. "Is it the state fruit?"
At her question, Juliette shrugged. "Well, I wanted to go to an Ivy League, but I was wait-listed instead of being accepted, and so I came here because my brother is an officer. He's also an alumni."

"I've never though about it before but I guess that there are." She tilted her head to the side. "It is indeed the state fruit. It is also one of most well-known exports of the state."
Sophia nodded at the explanation. "Family is a good reason to move. I suppose that that would also make your parents feel better. Moving into a town near your older brother I mean. Especially if he happens to be a police officer."

"That's probably why it's the state fruit," Juliette said with a tiny giggle. At her response, she shrugged. "My mum's a professor at Yale, so she knows how college works. She wanted me to move out. I think it's important for people to go to college away from home to make sure that they can live in the world, you know?" She smiled.

Sophia frowned just a little as Juliette talked about her mother. "My parents tried everything but tying me up and putting me in a closet to make me stay. They felt that a woman should have to leave her home until she gets married and then she only moves out to live with her husband." Realizing that this might sound a bit sexist she didn't really know what to say. Well, except for one thing. "Perhaps not everyone needs to move out and if you have the money to move away from home then you might as well so I guess I agree with that."
