Teddy's life happens one existential crisis after another. Because he was orphaned as a baby, he has no idea what his parents were like and so he has no idea where his personality came from or what it's supposed to be. The people who raised him always told him stories about his parents, but as the dead are often apotheosized in their lives' retelling, Teddy learned to take these stories with a grain of salt. Of course, he looked up to them as any young boy would, but the stories became more of a game to sift out their true personalities from the ones they acquired in the retelling. When they heroically stood up for what was right—what really happened? Were they punctual? Communicative? Heroic wasn't a legitimate personality trait--it was a label stuck on people for the things they did that other people witnessed, be they actually impressive or not.
Thus, Teddy grew up thinking he was a miasma of different traits that he had yet to discover. In reality, he's not quite so complex. If anything, anybody asked about Teddy would just say that he's a really, really nice guy. Growing up as an orphan, he was eternally grateful to everyone who raised him and this gratefulness transferred onto everyone else. He will never go without saying 'please' and 'thank you' where it's called for, nor would he ever pass by a person in need. Because he is so perpetually confused and involved in identity crises, he has become sort of meek and unassuming. Not that he cowers in the face of other people and socialization, just that he is unlikely to really offer any sort of resistance to anything. He's a good person to have if you just need someone to tag along and cheer you on and it is very easy to convince him to do things he might otherwise not want to do at all, like dress in a ridiculous costume or lurk somewhere awkward to find out something he didn't particularly care about knowing.
When it doesn't involve other people’s lives, however, Teddy knows a lot. Having grandparents that loved the library and then, later, working at a bookstore gave him access to countless books and he devoured them like a very hungry caterpillar. He always loved to learn new things and he was lucky, because his grandparents had been around for a long time and had a vast array of knowledge. Teddy has always been a very good listener and he retains almost everything he hears and reads. He can recall obscure facts at will, whether they be academic or about his friends, which makes him a good ear for problems. When he was a teenager, girls liked to tell him their problems because he always remembered them and he always had sage advice to give. For the most part, he was friendzoned instantly. Still, he is adept at giving advice, but any pretty girls that he has not known his entire life make him nervous. He is not good at being smooth unless he somehow manages to distance himself from his brain and can usually be found around attractive women stumbling over his words and saying odd things.
Since Teddy never had parents, he gained, throughout his life, a huge surrogate family. As such, family has become one of the most important things in his life. He can't stand to see people fighting with their siblings or parents, unless it's not serious, and he is almost always the person to give in in his own fights just to make sure that no one gets lastingly hurt. He's not very good at arguing in general, unless it's academic and he can pull from knowledge like a textbook. He almost always backs down, even when he's right, and doesn't realize that he was right and should not have backed down until it's too late. He is kind of like a doll, especially if a girl asks him to do something, in which case he will do it without a second thought. He often wishes that he was as cool and suave around the ladeez as his friends, but he would never have the courage to not be a doormat and so, he rolls through life as Teddy the Squishable and Draggable.
Strengths: Encouraging Teddy doesn't really believe in being mean, unless someone's gone to far with someone who doesn't deserve it, and he is always ready and willing to lend a friendly word for anyone. He also gives great advice.
Thorough If Teddy gets a job assigned to him, that job will be done perfectly and with 110 percent effort on Teddy's part, no matter how tedious or irritating.
Responsible Teddy can keep a secret like nobody's business. He doesn't particularly like gossip and he rarely partakes in it, which makes him the perfect receptable for dirty secrets. Not only that, but he's good at taking care of himself and others.
Weaknesses: meek Teddy's basically a doormat. He is easily dragged, convinced, maneuvered to do any number of things that he doesn't really want to or shouldn't.
awkward Unlike his best friend, Teddy has never been particularly smooth with the ladies. He never really knows what to say, so even though he's adorable and sweet, he tends to fail.
emotional Because he goes through life one existential crisis after another, he is prone to going randomly emo and waxing poetic.
Talents & Skills: Soccer, pursuit driving, puzzles.
Weaknesses: dealing with dead bodies, technology--the knowledge required to connect wires eludes him, asserting himself.
Likes: reading, monster novels, logic puzzles, snow, cars, gourmet girly sandwiches.
Dislikes: cheesecake, misogyny, arguing, loud people that aren't Hugo, sometimes Hugo, Halloween, the lack of seasons on Orange Island, loud noises.

John and Karen Lutz both intended to retire to desk jobs when their first child was born. Being on the field in the FBI was dangerous and, though they loved it, they wanted to be there for their future child. That worked out for a few months after Karen gave birth, but John continued to endanger his life because there was no one to take his place. When Teddy was three months old, Karen spoke to the director and convinced him that they both had to go on their last assignment and then take desk jobs, maybe even as code-crackers.
They never made it. Their surveillance vehicle had a bomb planted on it and they didn't stand a chance. Teddy, being only three months old, had no idea what happened and was largely unfazed at being moved from his house to his grandparents'. Of course, even babies know when voices change and are unhappy without their mother, but Teddy had spent much time with his grandparents and his grandmother's voice was soothing as well. By the time he was coherent and learning to speak, he didn't remember his parents at all. He had the best family any boy could want even without them, though, and there was always an abundance of cousins and aunts and uncles around to break from the monotony of his grandparents.
He grew up in a very quiet house, doing quiet things like reading and playing board games and watching educational television shows. He learned how to speak at a surprisingly young age and his trend of being smarter than average did not stop there. His grandmother started taking him to the library, where they would sit for hours and read books, then go home with a pile as big as what they'd just read there. He got into adventure books at a very young age and this was a love that never left him.
In school, he was a quiet boy, but he never wanted in friends. People learned early on that if they needed a lackey, Teddy was their guy. He rarely refused requests, as long as they were at least a little bit reasonable, and he was a team player. This was good in middle school, when everyone becomes a little jerk. Instead, Teddy was nice and no one really knew what to do with him. The girls all liked to giggle with each other about the weirder, more brave boys in their class and Teddy didn't want to be one of those. Fortunately[ish] for him, he met Hugo in seventh grade and everything changed. He now had a guy who was also nice, but insane as well and he became a permanent lackey.
When they started highschool, Hugo was attractive and instantly popular--especially since he had a british accent--but Teddy was the same as he'd always been. He was kind of short and, despite the burly broad shoulders he'd inherited from his father, he was fairly lanky and shrimpy. Girls really did not pay him any mind unless he had known them for a long time and instead, they paid attention to Hugo because Hugo was cute and did sports. Teddy was sure that he could have done sports as well, since he was always good at them when he played recreationally with his friends/family, but he much preferred to hole up in the library. He did join the chess team, but that did not get him in anyone's good graces but the team's.
The summer between ninth and tenth grade, however, saw Teddy starting to grow into his body. He shot up a few inches, lost his babyface, and finally started bulking up. Exercising with Hugo proved to not only be a fun bonding experience, but good for his abs as well and by the time he went back to school in the fall, Teddy himself was fairly attractive. By then, however, the damage was already done--Teddy had no idea how to speak to pretty females. Fortunately for him, there were enough girls that found his stumbling speech adorable and he did go on plenty of double dates with his friends and have a few girlfriends.
When it came time to go to college, Teddy was at a loss for what to do. He liked academics, but he had no real preferences other than liking to read--but he didn't really like English or writing particularly. He didn't think there was a major in monster books or monsterology. His grandparents could do nothing to help because neither of them had gone to college and their best advice was to do what he wanted to do. He wished that he had parents to help tell him what to do, but the next best thing he had was Hugo and Hugo's parents. He wasn't their child, though, and while they gave good advice, they couldn't make his decision for him. In the end, he followed Hugo.
His degree in criminology was brought on only because he knew he had FBI history. He thought he might like code-cracking--it was kind of like majoring in adventure novels. He never intended to go to the police academy, but it started to look more and more attractive so soon, he enrolled. It was much harder than he'd been expecting, but learning how to aim, fire, clean, disassemble, and reassemble a gun was fun, as were some of the obstacle courses. Orange Island was a shitty place to be on an obstacle course, just because it was so hot all the time, but he still enjoyed it and when he graduated [with honors], decided to just stay in Orange Island with Hugo and has now been on marina patrol for...one month.| A P P E A R A N C E |
As his name might suggest, Teddy is a lot like a Teddy bear. He's big--almost six feet--and very snuggly looking. He's naturally sort of brawny, which he gets from his father, and he's neither particularly buff nor fat, so he looks like everyone's favorite man pillow. When not in his uniform, he's usually in jeans and tries to at least look clean, whether it's in a t-shirt or a button down. He doesn't have a distinct walk or way of carrying himself. Rather, he looks a waspy rookie cop that's usually smiling.
Like his father, he has sandy brown hair that he keeps relatively short. He doesn't style it, but he would be very upset if anyone messed it up, as he likes to think that, without alteration, he is attractively windswept. Both of his parents had brown eyes and so does he. He looks most like his father, though, especially in the younger pictures.
