GREEK LIFE
So, you've never been to college before and are wondering just what, exactly, it has in store for you? Well, look no further! Here's a comprehensive guide to what being involved in Greek Life can mean for you, should you choose to participate. We hope this helps you decide!
Joining a sorority or a fraternity is not for everyone. Just like clubs and classes and majors, it takes a certain sort of person to be interested in it. Since OIU is a small school and only has ten Greek chapters [only two of which can be joined by you], all sorority and fraternity houses are located on Greek Row. They house 40 people each. Should there be more than 40 people in a chapter at once, only 40 people will be able to stay in the houses. Seniors have first option of where to live, then juniors, sophomores. Freshmen do not live on Greek Row. Each house has its own kitchen, chef, and dining hall. It's essentially like living in a mansion with forty people.
ADVANTAGES
It sounds pretty great, doesn't it? A house with everything you could ever need, people around all the time, and cool stuff to do does sound like a really great option. Here are some other reasons it's a great option:
- For social people, there will always be at least 40 other people you can party with.
- There is a party somewhere nearly every weekend.
- The friends you make there are friends for life. They're your Brothers and Sisters.
- There are lots of events and things, like dances and community service projects.
DISADVANTAGES
Despite its appearance, Greek life has many disadvantages. It's not for the faint of heart.
- For antisocial people, there will always be at least 40 other people in your business.
- There is a party somewhere nearly every weekend, so you will never sleep.
- If you don't like the people in your Sorority/Fraternity, you are stuck with them until you can gracefully leave.
- There are lots of events and things, which take a lot of effort and work. Remember, some people actually want to get good grades.
- It's not cheap. Not only is there an expensive rush fee, but there's a hefty membership fee each semester.
- So, essentially, you are paying an ass ton of money to have friends.
- Greek Life is not exactly smiled upon by everyone. Most people will think less of you.
Time to Rush!
