Alessa enjoys the role of "sexy, foreign beauty". She likes to be a bit mysterious and will not tell people her full life story, offering it only piece by piece. She is fairly impatient and thinks as fast as she acts. Alessa is very determined and a bit stubborn. She begrudgingly accepts help when needed, but quickly tries to take over and seem as independent and self-reliant as she knows she can be.
Alessa grew up with a close-knit family and tries to keep it that way. Although her brothers' constant prying into her life annoys her, she really values their opinions and trusts their advice--most of the time. She wants to make her parents proud and constantly reassures them (especially her father) that she is safe and happy. Alessa is very proud of her heritage and tries to hold onto a lot of her customs, but she has no problem acting "more American" and putting her Italian ways on the back burner. She rarely speaks Italian in public, typically only speaking it with her parents. She hasn't been back to Italy since her family immigrated and isn't sure if she wants to go.
A serial flirt, Alessa does not really look for long-term relationships. She hasn't had a steady boyfriend since high school, and contrary to her parents' beliefs she is not a virgin. She doesn't always date the best of guys and does not really have a "type". She does have standards, though, and will never have one-night stands or go after an authority figure just to get ahead.
Alessa does not like being wrong. She can be pretty argumentative and defensive, and tends to hold onto grudges and things longer than really necessary. Alessa is extremely professional and tries not to let her biases leak into her academic and work life. She is a bit emotional and connects to people on that level, though she will be the last to admit it.
With dreams of being a lead detective, Alessa is thrilled about her internship. She is a very hard worker and has achieved A's and B's since enrolling at OIU her freshman year. She has earned a few scholarships and hopes to get a job at a police department immediately after graduation, though she is not sure where she wants to go. She would like to go further west, but she knows her parents would hate having her live so far away.
Alessa has no real intentions of getting married in the near or distant future and, much to her mother's dismay, is not sure if she ever wants children. She is a pretty good cook like her mother, but does not enjoy it as much as Giuliana does. She is perfectly happy heating up some leftovers, something her mother would never be caught dead doing. She is pretty independent and likes making her own terms.
Talents & Skills: Flexible. Alessa will change her plans and actions at the drop of a hat if necessary. This also applies to her emotions--she can switch from happy to sad in a heartbeat when needed.
Saying the right thing. Growing up as not only the baby, but the only daughter, has made Alessa very skilled at telling people what they want to hear. This usually leads to her getting what she wants or needs.
Self-reliant. Alessa had to find her own way to do things when she first came to America, and that habit has followed her all the way to college. She will think outside of the box to get things done without help.
Weaknesses: Accepting. Alessa is not used to being turned down and will get defensive if it comes as a surprise. She will try repeatedly to change that "no" to a "yes".
Manipulative. While she doesn't try to do it vindictively, Alessa does not mind getting people to do or give her what she wants. She will flirt, flatter, and act like a damsel in distress if it means she will be successful.
Smug. When she's right, Alessa knows she's right. She won't come out and say it to your face, but she will throw an "I-told-you-so" smirk every chance she gets.
Likes: The beach, bikinis, dresses, fashion, crime novels, Law and Order, flirting, parties, talking, being right, winning, her family.
Dislikes: Losing, sweat pants, bossy people, being brushed off, CSI, snow, cold weather, turtlenecks, spiders, bugs, snakes, being dirty.[/

Michele and Giuliana Mercanti were born and raised in Trapani, Sicily, Italy. The two were practically destined to be married by their parents, and fortunately the two fell in love quickly. Michele followed in his father's footsteps as a fisherman, while Giuliana became what was expected of her--a dedicated wife and mother, who was a killer cook to boot.
It wasn't long before the couple started their family together. They had six sons--Alessandro, Cristiano, Dante, Gaspare, Luca, and Nico--all within a span of about seven years. Michele and Giuliana believed they were done having children, and were thrilled that they had such healthy boys. A piece of Giuliana, though, wanted a little girl to teach how to cook and dress up and have a little girly time with, and Michele secretly wanted a daughter to protect.
Four years after the youngest boy, Luca, was born, the family was surprised when Giuliana gave birth to a seventh child--the long- awaited daughter they named Alessa. Baby Alessa very quickly became the center of the family's attention, and her brothers took great care to make sure no one ever hurt her.
By the time Alessa was seven, Michele realized that a meager fisherman's pay in Italy would never be enough to give his large family the luxuries he so desired to. After a lot of thinking and some discussion with three cousins who had moved to the United States, Michele decided that it was the next logical step for him to ensure his family's happiness. Giuliana was nervous about such a large move, but as Michele was head of the household she went along with him. The Mercanti family moved to America and, after spending about a month in New York City, finally settled in a humble home in Arlington, VA--right outside Washington D.C.
Adjusting to a country where you do not speak the language was a difficult transition, especially for the children. Ranging in age from Gaspare--who was eighteen and a college freshman--to little Alessa in second grade, each of the Mercanti children had to learn how to adapt quickly. Alessa tried her hardest in school, but the other students teased her about her accent, her lack of English skills, and her meager clothing and possessions. Alessa grew more introverted and spent a lot of time at home, watching television and trying desperately to learn the language she heard every single day. Her favorite time of the day was watching crime shows with her father, who enjoyed the action even though he did not fully understand what was going on in the show.
By the time she entered third grade, Alessa was nearly fluent in English. Thrilled that she could finally participate in conversations with her peers, she started having an issue in class with being too chatty. She struggled over the next few years to find the right balance between being too talkative and being too weirdly quiet. By the time she was in high school, she had a large group of friends and was doing average academically.
When it came time to decide what to do for college, Michele and Giuliana heartily encouraged Alessa to follow her heart--while giving large hints that they wanted her to attend nearby George Mason University, where two of her brothers had attended and they could keep an eye on her. While not completely shooting that idea down, Alessa began looking at out-of-state schools right from the start. She decided to pursue a degree to become a detective as a nod to the shows and profession that had given her her start in her American life. By the beginning of her senior year in high school, she had narrowed her choices down to three schools: Penn State, UC Davis, or Orange Island University. She left the final decision up to her parents, and after some careful research and ratings, Michele selected Orange Island University because of its small size.
Alessa started college and immediately fell in love with the city and campus. She flourished in her classes and loved her major, and was fortunate enough to land an internship for her senior year. Alessa hopes to one day be a lead detective and cannot wait to graduate--hopefully with a job offer!| A P P E A R A N C E |
Standing at 5'4", Alessa adores fashion. She loves wearing skirts and dresses and tries to every chance she gets. She usually has her long brown hair down, and it is naturally wavy. Alessa has her ears pierced and loves jewelry. She has one green eye and one blue eye, and olive skin. She would not be caught dead wearing sweatpants and always has makeup on and her nails painted. She is also not that big of a fan of jeans. Because she was raised in a lower middle class home, Alessa has gotten used to shopping for looks that are cheaper than designer and yet still look like high-end clothes.
