When Townsend was a little kid, he was pretty much pegged by everyone to be a homosexual. He was always into activities considered more feminine by western society's standards; dance, theatre, piano playing, and many other activities requiring the grace and delicacy typically associated with females. On the other hand, Townsend was a husky boy, broadly built, not heavy but tough, and had the perfect build for football, the greatest American pastime. He loved to play contact sports, as well, becoming a star running back in high school. His interests, really, are all across the board, from the arts to athletics and academia. His parents are nothing but proud of him, being simple country folk and seeing their son go so far.
Townsend wants to make them proud. Despite what people may think, he is very sensitive about how other people see him, so he constantly strives to make himself a better and better person, working at mastering more and more new skills not only to reflect well upon other people, but to improve the space in which he's living and try to make people happier. This is why Townsend is most likely to be smiling when the public sees him, and is prone to keeping all his negative emotions private, so nobody has to feel bad, and therefore feel bad in general.
That isn't to say that he doesn't experience them. Townsend has the same emotional range as the average person, and although he does cry, he does get sad and depressed and angry, he likes to keep a good, friendly humor about himself, even when he's feeling that way, a la 'fake it till you make it' theory. You know you're close with him when he's willing to open up about his true feelings and express sadness to you. He can be aggressive, and he can be intense, but in the end he's a really nice guy, open-hearted and good, through and through.
Where romance is concerned, his tendency to trust and love unconditionally, like a dog, often gets his heart broken. He's honest to a fault and although he can be flirty, he's always faithful, and is mystified as to why anyone would be otherwise.
Basically Townsend is a perfect gentleman.

Lafayette, Louisiana, wasn't known for much in any place that wasn't Lafayette, Louisiana. A smallish town alongside a lazy river, Lafayette's folks believed in good, clean living and wholesome family values. None of that changed when Townsend was born. His parents were two good parents: Townsend Senior was the owner of a well-loved sporting goods store, and his mother was very involved in the local congregation, organizing things like church dinners and raffles and picnics and what-have-you. He had one older sister Robin, who dreamed of greater things and moved to New Orleans to pursue artistry when Townsend was twelve. It wasn't as if Townsend himself wasn't dreaming of greater things, he just found that things were already just fine the way they were. He had always been a happy boy, polite and gentlemanly, with a soft spot for playing both outside and with his Sega Genesis. He loved eating his mom's phenomenal cooking, delicious although fryer-heavy, and hanging out with his friends round the corner store. He was pretty much the most socially alright and well-adjusted child ever to exist. He had platoons of friends, and parents raved about his good manners, but like any other kid he had his own problems.
His problems came in the form of Mikey Roth, the school bully. Even though he got a lot of exercise, Townsend was a husky boy with a silly name, and for someone seeking to assert himself in the school kid hierarchy, that was enough fodder for Townsend to be bullied mercilessly through school. Often he came home with bruises and shiners that were mistaken for the normal wear and tear of a growing human boy. Rather than let himself not trust other human beings, the human beings that were ignoring his sorrows, Townsend figured that other people just didn't want to hear about his problems. He didn't know any ways to solve them, but he put on a confident smile and went through life as if his problems didn't exist. They didn't go away. But everybody else was happier, and that was something.
His first year of high school, Townsend tried out for the football team. Usually, freshmen didn't make the team, since there were so many other, better boys, but Townsend was a pretty big boy, good at football and speedy, and served as one of the reserve players, basically a benchwarmer for the entire season. Still his parents went to all the games and wore football swag. The next year, he tried out again, made the team and started actually playing in games. And he was good. He played many other sports in the off-season, but like a true southern boy, football was his real thing. By junior year, Townsend was pretty much the star player on the George Washington High Bears. Just like high school movies, he was pursued by all the popular girls, and he kept his grades up to stay on the team, and got a sweet letterman jacket in his senior year. He was a handsome boy and could have had his choice of any girl in the school because of his social standing, but he couldn't really find anyone he was interested in.
In the end, he had an affair with a teacher. Well, a student teacher, and he was of age, so it was really no big deal. But still, it was scandalous enough to lose him his full ride at University of Louisiana, and a lot of trust from his parents and friends. Eventually he came to Orange Island, whose school offered him a sports scholarship, but not nearly the same amount of money that Louisiana had given him. It was at university he discovered the Law Enforcement program, and realized that it would be the right thing for him. The correct combination of athleticism and acedemia to suit his needs, and lots of outdoor work to boot.| E X T R A S |
