ORANGE ISLAND WELCOMES
YOU!
YOU!
Population: 42,000
Location: A few miles off the coast of Boca Raton, Orange Island is connected to mainland Florida by a long bridge that is very easy to drive or walk across--much like Seven Mile Bridge in the Keys, but only about three miles.
Climate: Hot. Tropical. There's maybe one week a year where the residents of Orange Island need to wear sweaters, but it never really gets above 85-90 in the summer, due to its location on the water.
Main Industry: Fishing, of course. Centrally located, Orange Island is a hotspot for finding snapper, mahi mahi, hogfish, scallops, and shellfish. Tourism is also big.
Main Attractions: Other than the beach and all related activities, most residents of Orange Island find themselves fully obsessed with Orange Island University and their sports teams/events--even if they have never attended and know no one attending.
General Info: Since it's a fairly small island, most cars go unused. Most of the students who aren't locals don't even have a car because it's more of a hassle to deal with it than not. To get across the whole island is about a forty-five minute bike ride, maybe an hour to two hour walk. There are shuttles to the Fort Lauderdale airport daily for tourists/students needing to go home.
University: Popular as the site of one of the police academies in Florida, OIU boasts an excellent criminology/criminal justice program as well as good programs in psychology, sociology, and forensics, though it is most famous for it's marine biology program. It's got about 10,000 students. The school colors are orange and gold and their mascot is a koi. Their football team is D1 and they are in the Sunbelt Conference.
Problems: Crime. Being very hot and city-like, Orange Island is an incubus for young criminals and old criminals alike. But don't worry, the police force is always on duty and visitors are rarely threatened.
