Avery snorted. She couldn't help laughing at her as much as she felt that she should, but that wasn't a battle she was particularly concerned with winning. After all, she was already being nice to her--Emily couldn't have everything.
"Nope, Sophomore. But I'm studying art, too." She pressed the pedal harder to make the boat go a little faster--after all, what was the point of a speed boat if you didn't speed in it? "You live on campus?"

Emily quickly grasped the edge of the boat as they suddenly took on speed, even though it was not as dramatic a speed change as she was acting like it was.
She momentarily mused over what Avery had said about her major. Avery was what Emily could be--free to study whatever she wanted, content to just piddle around on a boat instead of making sure she looked perfect, acted perfect, was perfect. She had to admit, she was jealous.
She immediately put a stop to her thinking and focused on the conversation (she was having an actual conversation, this was great!) at hand. "Yes...it's too far to get home since I live in Rhode Island." Not that my parents would want me there anyway. "Do you?"

Avery glanced at the girl's hand and let up a bit on the speed, but not too much. If she got used to it, she'd probably like it.
"Well, I knew you didn't commute every day," she said, snorting. She wasn't sure that this girl really knew how to exist in the college environment, but that was not Avery's problem and so she was determined to say nothing in that vein.
"Nah, my house isn't far. I can bike to class. Besides, the sophomore dorm and I have the same name. It would be awkward to live there." She smirked.

Emily blushed when Avery snorted. It wasn't like she intentionally said things that were completely obvious, she was just terrible at continuing conversation. Much to her parents' annoyance and displeasure, Emily often found ways to bow out of social events. When she did attend, they were content enough to leave her alone and let her just watch people instead of speaking. Children were meant to be seen, not heard, after all.
Emily's eyes widened when Avery mentioned the dorms. "You have a dorm named after you?" she asked, surprised. "So is your father a senator or something? Or an alumnus? That's usually how you get buildings named after you, isn't it? At home it is..."

Avery gritted her teeth. Yes, the building was named after her--well, her grandfather--, but she didn't like to actually point that fact out and whenever people pointed out that they lived in a building with her last name, she shrugged it off. Now, she had been so careful with her wording and this girl just went and took it the wrong way. Still, she wasn't just going to agree.
"I said we had the same name, not that it was named after me. It's 'Dawson'--not exactly uncommon." She rolled her eyes. Maybe the girl had a family in politics, too--although Avery's family had been out of politics by the time she was born, so she didn't think she really counted as a political family.

Emily flushed, getting a bit irritated. "They name buildings after families," she retorted. "I'll bet you are a member of the Dawson family that the dorm is named after."
She paused for a moment before speaking again. "You don't have to be embarrassed...I know how much it can suck. You know. Having a well-known family." She quieted, leaning her head on her hand.
